Removing Aches and Pains – The Academy

"No matter how much I stretch, my flexibility is not improving..."

I'll never forget the day JJ walk through my doors on a Tuesday morning for our "10 Elements" class. The "10 Elements" was a class I ran on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-9:30am.

(here's a peek at one of the 1st ever video case studies I did on this for a certification I now teach).

 Back to JJ.

Every morning, he'd come in ~15 minutes early and "stretch."

The next class he'd come in early again to "stretch."

 I noticed each time.

He was stuck in the same place.

Basically he was making ZERO progress. I asked him how it was working for him and that's when he told me...

"... no matter how much I stretch, my flexibility is not improving..."

And what I told him didn't help.

"It's all in your head."

To help you understand and explain what was happening with JJ. I gotta share what happened to me ~2002 when I bought my first computer. It was a HUGE Hewlett-Packard desktop.

Remember those?

(Today I'm writing to you from a fancy M1 iMac)

 I'll never forget the day.

I started getting all these "pop ups" on my computer. The computer would freeze up, I'd have to restart it and... it was only a matter of time before I had to repeat the process.

I took it to a computer repair place here in CC (this was before the days of "Geek Squad").

The guy at the counter told me my PC had been infected with a "Trojan Virus." It had to be removed.

Then he asked if I wanted to buy the "anti-virus" software to protect my computer from future attacks.

I declined because the repairs themselves nearly broke my bank account. I told him I'd come back after next payday.

And sure as the sky is blue.

The virus came back a few days after surfing the web.

You see.

The reason JJ wasn't seeing progress with his stretching was... he didn't [know how to] install anti-virus software.

Movement viruses come in many forms.

  • Injury.
  • Poor posture.
  • Lack of activity.
  • Repetitive movements.
  • And sitting for hours per day.

To name a few.

  • Foam rolling.
  • Lacrosse ball work.
  • And stretching.

... are like removing the virus from a computer. It's a temporary fix. A window of opportunity to make a lasting change.

But.

If you don't reinstall new [anti-virus] software. The viruses come back.

Sometimes, with a vengeance. This is why traditional stretching, foam rolling, and "movement prep" doesn't work long term.

It was a light bulb moment for JJ. Especially when I exposed him to our...
